The City of Lake Butler has a new mayor, chosen by his peers at the July meeting of the city commission.
David Stegall has served on the Lake Butler City Commission since 2020. He was nominated for the position of mayor by Commissioner Melissa Hendrix and her nomination was approved unanimously. He is best known to many in Union County as the creator and administrator of the Lake Butler Community Page on Facebook, which he still maintains. He is active in the community and has volunteered his assistance to several events, organizations and causes. He said he is “pleased to work with his fellow commissioners on getting the city back to how it should be.” He states that as his main focus in working for the city.
Stegall said he has worked up a job description for the commission to review to include in the advertisements for a new city manager. He said he has worked in hiring before and he has a good idea of what a prospective applicant will want to know when applying. He hopes to help locate a new manager who will share his vision for the future of Lake Butler.
“I hope we can find someone who will encourage managed growth with an eye to keeping the small town feel we have here,” Stegall said. “I would like to see growth that would create more jobs and the development of a better working relationship with the county.”
Stegall said he is enjoying public service and said he will probably run for his commission seat again next year.
“I enjoy our commission,” Stegall said. “We have a good mix of personalities and expertise. I want to continue to help with the city’s recovery from the problems that have recently come to light and I have enjoyed my experience in working and learning with my fellow commissioners.”
He said he was surprised to be nominated and then elected as mayor by his peers and he said he will do the best job he can in his new position.
“I am humbled and appreciative of my fellow commissioners giving me the opportunity to be mayor for the coming year,” Stegall said.
