A 17-year-old Lake Butler boy was killed Friday afternoon, February 27, in a three-vehicle crash on State Road 121 in Union County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. near Southwest 79th Trail when a green Ford pickup truck traveling southbound rear-ended a black Ford SUV that had slowed to make a left turn.

The force of the impact pushed the SUV into the northbound lane, where it was struck on the right side by a tractor-trailer. The semi rolled over after the collision, blocking both lanes of State Road 121. The pickup truck came to rest on the east shoulder and caught fire.

The 17-year-old male driver of the SUV, a Lake Butler resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the pickup truck, a 30-year-old Lake Butler man, was transported with serious injuries. The tractor-trailer driver, a 38-year-old Gainesville man, also suffered serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
