A shipment of protective gear is finally in Kyiv, reported businessman and former Bradford County resident Dwight Hewett this week.

Hewett, who has a strong relationship with the culture and country of Ukraine and is involved with the Ukraine Congress Committee of America, helped organize donations of thousands of ballistic vests from the Miami-Dade Police Department and smaller agencies, including the Starke Police Department. In addition to life-saving bullet-proof vests, Hewett visited communities and collected helmets, gas masks and other equipment.

Hewett was in Starke June 10. He said customs delays in Germany and Poland, as well as long lines into Ukrainian territory, delayed the shipment. The two 40-foot container have arrived in Kyiv, however, where leaders, soldiers and civilians continue to defend their country from Russia.

Hewett once again expressed his gratitude for the city’s donations.
