Tigers compete in Dual in the Dunes wrestling tournament

Union County High School went 2-1 in its pool before losing to New Smyrna Beach and host Fernandina Beach at the Dec. 10 Dual in the Dunes wrestling tournament.

The Tigers lost 58-22 to Clay, which was the only team better than Union in Pool A with a 3-0 record. Ian Halfacre (132-pound weight class) pinned his opponent in 3:27, while Ethan Shea (138) recorded a 12-2 major decision. Dante Johnson (152) pinned his opponent in 1:06. Clay forfeited one class.

In a 42-36 win over Charlton County, Georgia, Braden Adams (126) pinned his opponent in 47 seconds, while Shea pinned his in 3:15. Charlton forfeited five classes.

The Tigers had five wrestlers win by pins in a 42-40 win over Lake Mary: Halfacre in 1:58, Shea in 43 seconds, Johnson in 1:07, Danny Thornton (195) in 1:26 and Ephriam Frometa (285) in 35 seconds. Lake Mary forfeited two classes.

In the matches for placement, Union lost 69-12 to New Smyrna Beach before a 42-35 loss to Fernandina.

Against Fernandina, Halfacre defeated his opponent 9-2, while Thornton defeated his 17-10. Two wrestlers pinned their opponents: Johnson in 4:09 and Frometa in 50 seconds. Fernandina forfeited three classes.

On Dec. 3, Union competed in the 10-team Buchholz Bobcat Round Robin, with Halfacre winning the 132 class championship.

Halfacre won by pins of 22 seconds, 2:31 and 2:50 before pinning Timber Creek’s Logan Crawford in 1:39.

Four wrestlers earned fourth-place finishes: Kale Waters (113), Shea, Thornton and Frometa.
