Tigers defeat Bell, end 2-match skid

Jailyn Simmons had 17 kills and six blocks as the Union County High School volleyball team bounced back from its second straight loss, defeating host Bell 3-2 (20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 15-10) on Sept. 12.

The Tigers (4-3) got 11 kills each from Layla Barber and Indi Knox and seven kills from Rylie Parrish, who also had three blocks.

Jurney Crim led the team in digs with 23, while Kamryn Southerland had 14. Jordan Hendricks added eight digs, while Barber and Simmons each had six.

Hendricks and Southerland recorded 25 and 16 assists, respectively. Hendricks also had seven service aces, while Knox had three.

Union entered the match off a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-17) loss to visiting Branford on Sept. 11. Simmons had 10 kills and three blocks, while Crim had 20 digs.

Hendricks and Southerland each had 10 digs, with Hendricks adding seven assists and Southerland adding six assists.

The Tigers will play in the Jacksonville Juniors Volleyball Association River City Classic, which begins Friday, Sept. 15, at the JJVA training center at 8457 Western Way. Union will play Newberry at 5:30 p.m. and Matanzas at 8 p.m.

Matchups and game times on Saturday, Sept. 16, will be determined by day-one action.
