Tigers defeat Indians 3-1 in Oct. 4 volleyball match

Union County High School’s volleyball team avenged getting swept by Keystone Heights in a Sept. 27 match, with Jaycee Davis contributing 20 kills and 20 digs in a 3-1 (25-17, 25-13, 24-26, 25-22) win over the visiting Indians on Oct. 4.

The Tigers (10-8) also got two blocks from Davis, while Sabrena Howard and Emily Wilson led the team with three each. Howard added nine kills and 15 digs, while Maegan Beatty had 36 assists, seven digs and six kills. Junrey Crim and Chrissy Quiett had 14 and nine digs, respectively.

Keystone (11-9) got 31 assists from Kori Jennings, who also added seven kills. Sarah Siebert led the Indians in attacking with 10 kills, while Riley Barry and Kiersten Shaw each had eight. Jules Padgett led the team in digs with 15, while Della Boyette had eight.

Union entered the match off a 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-17) win over visiting Williston on Sept. 28. Beatty had 34 assists and eight digs, while Davis had 21 digs, 15 kills and two blocks. Crim led the team in digs with 18, while Wilson recorded a team-high in blocks with four. Howard had 14 kills, eight digs and two blocks.

The Tigers went 1-1 in matches following the Keystone win, beginning with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 29-27) win over visiting Bell on Oct. 5. Beatty had 30 assists, while Davis had 20 digs and 17 kills. Howard and Crim had 17 and 13 digs, respectively, with Howard also recording 11 kills.

Union lost 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 25-16) at home to The Rock on Oct. 7. Beatty had 42 assists, while Davis recorded 21 kills and 18 digs. Beatty and Davis also had four service aces each.

Crim had 18 digs, while Howard and Addisyn Worrell had 16 and 12, respectively. Howard also had 14 kills.

The Tigers played Baker County this past Monday and concluded their regular season against Saint Francis this past Tuesday. Union now prepares for the District 7-1A tournament, which it’ll host. According to the Florida High School Athletic Association, the top seed Tigers will play a semifinal match against fourth seed Hilliard on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 5:30 p.m. If Union wins, it’ll play second seed Newberry or third seed Bradford for the championship on Thursday, Oct. 21, at 6:30 p.m.

Keystone played Interlachen this past Tuesday and will conclude the regular season with a home match against Dixie County on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 6:30 p.m. The Indians then play in the District 3-3A tournament, which they’ll host. According to the FHSAA, Keystone, as the second seed, will play quarterfinal match against seventh seed Umatilla on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. If the Indians win, they’ll play third seed Father Lopez or sixth seed Crescent City in a semifinal match on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. Another win would advance the Indians to the championship match on Friday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. There, they’d face top seed Trinity Catholic, fourth seed Interlachen or fifth seed P.K. Yonge.
