Tigers end volleyball skid with 3-1 win over Suwannee

Jailyn Simmons had 18 kills, while Abigail Williams recorded 28 assists in the Union County High School volleyball team’s 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-17, 25-13) win over Class 3A Suwannee on Sept. 2 in Live Oak.

Simmons also had eight blocks and four service aces as the Tigers (2-4) snapped a three-match losing streak.

Layla Barber and Morgan Smith finished with eight and six kills, respectively, with Barber also having seven digs.

Bella Johns led the Tigers in digs with 20, while Indi Knox and Bayley Staier had 15 and 10, respectively.

Johns and Knox also had three aces each.

Union was coming off a week in which it dropped matches against Lafayette and Oak Hall.

In a 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-20) loss at Lafayette on Aug. 27, Knox had seven kills to go along with seven digs, while Barber and Simmons each had six kills. Simmons also had five blocks.

Johns finished with 17 digs, while Staier and Kamryn Southerland had eight and six, respectively.

Southerland and Williams each had six assists.

The Tigers hosted Oak Hall on Aug. 29, losing 3-1 (21-25, 27-25, 25-21, 25-16).

Simmons posted a double-double with 11 kills and 11 blocks. Barber and Smith each had seven kills, with Barber adding seven digs and Smith adding five blocks.

Johns and Knox had 15 and 11 digs, respectively, while Southerland had 10. Staier and Williams added eight and six, respectively.

Southerland had 10 assists, while Williams had eight.

Union hosts Williston on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 6 p.m., following a junior varsity match at 5 p.m. The Tigers then host Keystone Heights on Monday, Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m. The JV teams will play at 5:30 p.m.
