Tigers lose 6-5 on wild pitch in the 7th inning

Host Suwannee scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Union County High School baseball team 6-5 on March 17.

The Bulldogs’ Matthew Gill reached on a two-out error. He stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring the winning run on a wild pitch.

Union (4-4) led 5-2 after the first two innings.

The Tigers’ Quinten Rawls led off the game with a walk, followed by a Jake O’Steen single. Ayden Elixson then homered to center field to put Union ahead 3-0. Eli Rimes doubled and scored on a Trevor Holtzendorf single.

Suwannee cut into the lead in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs on an error to make the score 4-2.

Jeff Cook drew a walk to lead off Union’s half of the second. He eventually scored on a Jay Cohen single.

The Bulldogs made it 5-3 in the fourth, with a runner who reached on a walk scoring on a double.

Suwannee then tied the score with a two-run fifth. Camdon Frier, who walked, scored on a ground out, while Joshua Fernald hit a solo homer.

Rimes was the only Union batter with more than one hit, finishing 2 for 4.

Pitchers Rawls and Tre’von Lee combined to give up three hits. Rawls and Lee struck out five and four, respectively.

Union travels to play in a tournament in Viera Monday through Wednesday, March 21-23, at USSSA Space Coast Complex. The Tigers play Coral Springs at 4 p.m. on March 21 and Green Farms Academy at 4:30 p.m. on March 22. The March 23 games are to be determined.
