Union County High School’s football team was shut out for the second straight week, closing out the regular season with a 42-0 loss to visiting Chiefland on Oct. 31.

Chiefland, which is third in the Florida High School Athletic Association/MaxPreps Rural Class power rankings, scored three touchdowns in each half in improving to 9-1

It was the fourth straight loss for the Tigers (2-7), who’ll play at least one more game as part of the Rural Class’ Florida Invitational Tournament. Matchups and brackets will be announced by the FHSAA on Thursday, Nov. 6.

The football, cheer and band seniors were celebrated prior to kickoff. In a show of appreciation, the football coaching staff named all 15 seniors as captains — a fitting tribute to the leadership and dedication the players have shown through adversity this season. Many were first-year players who showed grit and determination through every game.

Despite the Tigers having homefield advantage, the Indians wasted no time setting the tone. On their first play from scrimmage, Matt Goodale broke free for a 58-yard touchdown run. Luis Galicia added the extra point to give Chiefland an early 7-0 lead.

Union’s offense struggled to find rhythm against an aggressive, tough defense. The Tigers managed just five first downs and 56 total yards for the night.

The Indians struck again midway through the first quarter when Goodale threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Adams. Chiefland, after Galicia’s PAT, led 14-0.

Chiefland, which built a 21-0 lead by halftime, continued to roll in the second half.

Coaching staff changes, injuries, player transfers and tough competition proved to be hard for the Tigers to overcome this season, but the team still played hard every play and gave 110 percent until the final whistle blew. The coaches are optimistic about the future as young players gained valuable experience.
