Union County couldn’t get its bats going against Fort White pitcher Kadence Compton, striking out 14 times and getting only two hits in a 4-0 loss in the Region 3-1A softball championship on May 17 in Fort White.

The Tigers (18-6) were attempting to advance to the Final Four for the first time since 2017.

Fort White (15-7) scored all the runs it’d need in the bottom of the first. Gracie Clemons, who singled, scored on a double by Compton, while Ciara Byrd, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a single by Kaitlyn Suggs.

Union’s best chance to score occurred in the third. Maggie Thomas hit a leadoff single. One out later, Tamia Young singled. A strikeout and a fly out ended the inning.

Kompton didn’t need much run support, but she helped her own cause by hitting a two-run homer in the sixth.
