The Union County Sheriff’s Office said it arrested one middle school student and one elementary school student after Lake Butler Elementary received a threat through voicemail on Friday, September 13.

The agency said both minors were taken into custody before classes started.

“(The students do) not pose a threat to the school district,” the office said.  “They are both charged with a felony crime.”

Following the incident, Superintendent of Schools Mike Ripplinger said the acts are serious, “and we no longer live in a day and time in which we can excuse threats as ‘kids are just going to be kids.’”

The schools chief said staff members are emphasizing to students the seriousness of making threats, and he asked parents to preach the same message to their children.
