LAKE BUTLER — The Union County Riding Club held its annual awards dinner and ceremony on Jan. 13, 2023 at the First Christian Church in Lake Butler.
After all in attendance enjoyed a buffet style meal, the members gave their attention to the crowning of the Club Queen, Celia Elixson and Princess, Addyson Kelley, then the awards portion of the event proceeded. The awards were for the 2022 season for total accumulated points in a series of events the club holds twice a month. The classes are divided by age of the rider.

There were two competitors in the Lead Line class, neither of whom were on hand to accept their certificate. They were, in order of points earned, Easton Stuart and Cason Croft.
There were 17 riders in the Youth Class, with six receiving awards. They were, in order from first to sixth: Cuyler Collins, Naomi Croft, Teghan Sullivan, Emmy Croft, Celia Elixson and Gage Lewis.
Receiving their awards next were members of the Teen Class. They were, in order from first to sixth: Cadence Collins, Alea Smith, Maddie Croft, Brooke Goldie and Cameron Jones.
Once the youngsters were taken care of the adults had their chance to receive recognition as well.
In the Adult Class four riders received certificate in recognition of the participation and skill. They were, in order, Brian Lagasse (who was not present at the event), Summer Andes, Katy Goldie (also not present) and Naomi Jones.
Saving the best for last came the awards for the Senior Class riders. The winners were: Janice Parrish, Ronnie Williams, Tracy Whitley Gary Cothran and Sue Lagassee (who was not present at the event).
Other awards were given as well for members who had made positive contribution to the club. They included: the Harlis R. Ellington Memorial Award for leadership and sportsmanship, won by Celia Elixson and the J.P. Bennett Memorial Award for outstanding dedication and leadership in the club, awarded to the Rev. Shane Collins, pastor of the church where the event was held.
All winners, in all classes of competition received certificates or plaques, riding gear and other gifts, including custom backpacks and jackets in some of the classes.
The riding club would like to thank and recognize local businessman Bart Andrews, of Andrews Site Prep, who gave his time and energy to helping rework the club’s arena free of charge and his other many contributions to the club.
The Union County Riding Club is growing again, after a few years with declining numbers. Now, at the beginning of its 2023 season, the club has more than 50 members and is hoping to add even more.
