Union County High School’s baseball team plated nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings, defeating visiting University Christian 11-2 on March 14.
University took a 2-1 lead with a run in the top of the fifth, but the Tigers answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Quinten Rawls and Jake O’Steen hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, while Jay Cohen was intentionally walked. Tre’von Lee singled to score two runs and give Union the lead for good. Cohen later scored on a steal of home, while Lee would come around to score on an error.
The Tigers put two on in the sixth, with Jake Walker walking and O’Steen hitting a single. Both scored on a Cohen single. The bases were loaded after a Lee single and a walk given up to Ayden Elixson. Eli Rimes was hit by a pitch to force a run in. Trevor Holtzendorf then hit a two-run single to end the scoring.
Cohen finished with three RBI, while Holtzendorf and Lee (who went 3 for 4) each had two. Rimes had one RBI, while O’Steen went 2 for 4.
Starting pitcher Luke Johns gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits through 4.2 innings. He had seven strikeouts.
Walker finished the game off on the mound, giving up one hit and striking out five.
The Tigers are scheduled to host Bradford tonight at 6:30 p.m. and will travel to play Suwannee on Thursday, March 17, at 7 p.m. Union then travels to play in a tournament in Viera Monday through Wednesday, March 21-23, at USSSA Space Coast Complex. The Tigers play Coral Springs at 4 p.m. on March 21 and Green Farms Academy at 4:30 p.m. on March 22. The March 23 games are to be determined.
