The Union County High School boys golf team had finished behind Branford in two earlier matches, but on Oct. 5, the Tigers placed second ahead of Branford in an Oct. 5 tri-match that Lafayette won at Quail Heights Country Club in Lake City.
Union, which had finished two and five strokes behind Branford in those earlier matches, had a team score of 200, which was six strokes better than Branford, the match host. Lafayette had a score of 183.
Caleb Zapp, who made par on one hole, shot a fourth-place score of 47, while Caleb Ripplinger finished in a four-way tie for sixth with a score of 49. Andrew Laux, who made par on one hole, and Matthew Laux placed 10th and 11th, respectively, with scores of 51 and 53.
Grant Dicks and Eli Elixson, who each made par on one hole, also participated for the Tigers. Dicks had a 15th-place score of 61, while Elixson had a 17th-place score of 66.
The Tigers were coming off a first-place finish on Oct. 4, defeating host First Christian by 47 strokes at Turkey Creek Golf and Country Club.
Union, which had a score of 203, was led by Zapp, who was the medalist with a score of 40. Zapp had a birdie and made par on four holes.
Ripplinger, who made par on two holes, was third at 53, while Matthew Laux, who made par on one hole, was fourth at 54. Andrew Laux shot a fifth-place score of 56.
The Tigers’ Dicks had a sixth-place score of 62, while Elixson and Tucker Williams each shot a 10th-place score of 71.
