UCHS softball team defeats 4A North Marion 5-2

Union County High School’s softball team ended a two-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over Class 4A North Marion on March 29 in Lake Butler.

North Marion (7-4) had three hits in the first inning and scored two runs, but the Colts were held to four hits the rest of the way by pitcher Shyla Crowe, who allowed one earned run and one walk in a complete-game effort.

The Class 1A Tigers (5-7) got on the board in the second when Brooke Hunt drove in a run. They tied the game in the third, with Jaydin Alvarez hitting a leadoff single and scoring on a Leanne Dicks ground out.

Union took the lead with a two-run fifth. Emma Handley singled and later scored when Dicks reached on an error. Mackenzie Orton then hit an RBI single.

Alvarez went 2 for 3 with one RBI. The Tigers also got one RBI each from Dicks, Hunt and Orton.

The week began with a 10-0 loss to host Branford on March 26 in which the Tigers were held to no hits. Union was then held to two hits in a 9-1 loss at Bell on March 28.

Union tied Bell 1-1 in the fourth. Crowe hit a two-out double. Brooke Burgess, who entered to run for Crowe, scored on a Campbell Webb single.

Bell scored two runs in the fifth and six runs in the sixth.

The Tigers host Class 3A Bradford on Monday, April 1, at 6:30 p.m.
