UCHS softball team gets 13-12 win on a bases-loaded walk

Hailey Rivera drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to give the Union County High School softball team a 13-12 win over visiting Trenton on March 4.

The Tigers (5-0) fell behind 12-10 when Trenton hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the inning, Campbell Webb drew a one-out walk. With two outs, Hannah Rivera and Angela Tucker each singled, with Webb scoring on Tucker’s single. Tamia Young walked to load the bases, followed by Leah Clark drawing a walk to force the tying run in. Hailey Rivera then walked to end the game.

An RBI triple by Clark helped Union tie the score at 4-4 in the second. The Tigers went up 6-4 in the third, with Tucker hitting an RBI single and Young drawing a bases-loaded walk.

Trenton went up 9-6, but Union retook the lead with four runs in the fifth. The Tigers began that inning with five consecutive singles hit by Tucker, Young, Clark, Hailey Rivera and Nyasia Williams, with one run scoring on Rivera’s hit and two scoring on Williams’ hit. Webb drove in another run on a ground out.

Hailey Rivera finished with four RBI, while Tucker went 4 for 4 with two RBI. Clark went 3 for 5 with two RBI, while Young was 2 for 3 with one RBI. Williams and Webb had two and one RBI, respectively, while Hannah Rivera went 2 for 4.

It was the Tigers’ third game of the week, which began with a 12-0 win over visiting Buchholz in 4.5 innings on March 1.

Hailey Rivera, who went 2 for 3 with two RBI, gave Union the only run it needed with a solo homer in the first.

The Tigers pushed five across in the second, with Young hitting a two-run double and Tucker, Hailey Rivera and Maggie Thomas each hitting an RBI single.

Tucker would go on to hit two more run-scoring singles to finish 3 for 3 with three RBI.

Thomas and Young each finished with two RBI, with Thomas going 2 for 3. Hannah Rivera had one RBI.

Pitcher Megan Sullivan went the distance, giving up three hits and two walks, while striking out seven.

Williams and Hailey Rivera each drove in three runs in the Tigers’ 10-0, six-inning win at Bell on March 3.

It was a scoreless game until the third, when Union scored three runs. Young and Hailey Rivera each drove in one with a single before Williams pushed two across with a double.

The Tigers added three runs in the fourth on two errors, while Hailey Rivera hit a two-run double as part of a three-run sixth, which also included a run scored on Williams’ sacrifice fly.

Tucker and Young each went 3 for 3, while Hailey Rivera went 2 for 4.

Lily Neal and Sullivan combined to throw a no-hitter, with Neal getting the start and throwing 3.2 innings. Each pitcher recorded three strikeouts.

The Tigers play at Santa Fe on Tuesday, March 8, at 7 p.m. and will host Hawthorne on Thursday, March 10, at 6:30 p.m. Union travels to play Gainesville on Friday, March 11, at 7 p.m. before traveling to play Newberry on Monday, March 14, at 6 p.m.
