UCHS volleyball team goes 2-3 in JJVA tourney

Union County High School’s volleyball team got a win over Class 5A St. Augustine and fellow Class 1A team Newberry, but ultimately finished with a 2-3 record at the Sept. 15-16 Jacksonville Juniors Volleyball Association River City Classic.

The seventh-ranked Tigers (6-6) opened play with a 2-1 (25-18, 22-25, 15-8) win over Newberry. Jailyn Simmons and Layla Barber had 10 and eight kills, respectively. Each player had two blocks, with Barber adding five digs.

Jordan Hendricks and Kamryn Southerland had 11 and 10 assists, respectively. Hendricks also had six digs and three service aces, while Southerland added 11 digs.

Jurney Crim and Indi Knox had nine and seven digs, respectively. Abby Williams had six digs, while Bella Johns had five.

Rylie Parrish had two blocks.

Union lost 2-0 (25-14, 25-17) to 16th-ranked Class 6A Matanzas. Simmons and Barber had five and four kills, respectively, with Barber adding six digs.

Crim had 21 digs, while Hendricks had seven to go along with five assists.

Southerland also recorded five assists.

The Tigers lost 2-1 (25-16, 25-27, 15-9) to ninth-ranked Class 1A Williston despite getting 14 kills from Simmons. Barber and Knox each had five kills.

Hendricks had 11 assists and six digs, while Southerland had six assists.

Crim led the team in digs with 13.

Union bounced back, defeating St. Augustine 2-0 (25-17, 25-15). Simmons recorded five kills, six blocks and six aces, while Hendricks had seven assists, nine digs and two blocks.

Crim added 10 digs.

The Tigers wrapped up the tournament with a 2-0 (25-10, 25-21) loss to Class 4A West Florida. Hendricks, Knox and Simmons each had three kills, with Hendricks adding six digs and five assists.

Crim and Southerland had nine and five digs, respectively, with Southerland adding six assists.

Union travels to Gainesville to play The Rock on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 6:30 p.m., following a junior varsity match at 5:30 p.m. The Tigers travel to Class 4A Keystone Heights, with the JV teams playing at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 7 p.m.

The Tigers go on the road to play Dixie County on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 5:30 p.m. before returning home to play The Rock on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 6:30 p.m., following a JV match at 5:30 p.m.
