Union golfers finish 2nd in Sept. 12 match

Caleb Zapp came close to being match medalist for the third straight match, but he wound up settling for second overall as the Union County High School golf team placed second in a tri-match at Lake City’s Quail Heights Country Club on Sept. 12.

Madison County placed first with a team score of 176, followed by Union (195) and Branford (213).

Zapp shot a 40 to finish two strokes behind Madison’s Bryson Olive. He had a birdie and made par on three holes.

Colby Dukes and Caleb Ripplinger were sixth and seventh, respectively, with scores of 49 and 50. Dukes had a birdie, while Ripplinger made par on one hole.

Tucker Williams had a 10th-place score of 56, while Grant Dicks and Eli Elixson were 12th and 14th, respectively, with scores of 58 and 61.

The Tigers (3-10-1) placed third behind Madison and Lafayette in a Sept. 1 at Madison, finishing with a team score of 211. That left Union 22 strokes behind Madison and 14 strokes behind Lafayette.

Zapp made par on three holes to finish with a fourth-place score of 47. Ripplinger was eighth at 51, while Williams and Dicks placed 10th and 11th, respectively, with scores of 56 and 57. Williams made par on one hole.

Zoe Elixson, who made par on one hole, had a 15th-place score of 65, while Patrick Maxwell had a 16th-place score of 70.

Union picked up its first win during a Sept. 6 home match. Taylor County won the match with a score of 206, but the Tigers had a score of 215 to finish six strokes ahead of Branford.

Zapp made par on four holes to finish as medalist with a score of 44, while Dicks was fifth with a score of 55.

Williams and Ripplinger finished in a four-way tie for ninth at 58. Dukes and Eli Elixson were 13th and 15th, respectively, with scores of 60 and 61.

Zapp was the medalist again when Union defeated visiting First Christian Academy on Sept. 8. Zapp had a birdie and made par on three holes to finish with a score of 41.

The Tigers’ team score of 211 put them in first by 41 strokes.

Ripplinger, who made par on three holes, placed third with a score of 47, while Jordan Seay and Zoe Elixson were fourth and fifth, respectively, with scores of 61 and 62.

Braden Adams shot a 66 to place sixth, while Maxwell had the eighth-place score of 68.
