Union County High School’s Malcolm Odum earned a state-finals berth by placing second in the 200m at the Region 1-2A track and field championships at Tommy Oliver Stadium in Panama City Beach on May 5.
Odum ran a time of 21.65, which left him trailing Florida High’s Micahi Danzy, who had a time of 21.41. Still, as a top-two finisher, Odum earned an automatic bid to the state finals, which will be held Thursday, May 12, at the University of Florida’s Percy Beard Track. The boys 200m will start at 8:15 p.m.
A fourth-place time of 48.89 in the 400m was good enough for Odum to earn at an-large bid to state. The event will start at 7:45 p.m. at the state meet.
Martin Odum earned two at-large state berths in the same races. He was fourth in the 200 with a time of 22.16 and seventh in the 400m with a time of 49.92.
The two sprinters were the only Union athletes to earn points for top-eight finishes.
Brycen Boney also competed for the boys team, placing 14th in the long jump with a distance of 18-6.
Emma Jeffers led the girls team with a 10th-place finish in the 1600m. She ran a time of 6:29.
The girls 4x100m relay team was 14th with a time of 57.37, while Taleyah Smith was 15th in the discus with a distance of 74-9.
