Updates on shooting at Little Auntie’s Daycare on Starke’s Washington Street

“It looked like a normal pickup.” Video captured shooting at daycare

9:02 p.m. Bradford Sheriff’s Major George L. Konkel, Jr. said that in addition to his detectives interviewing eyewitnesses, he has viewed video of the shooting at Little Auntie’s Daycare, which implicates the woman deputies now have in custody.

Konkel said that two parents were at the facility to pick up their children.  He declined to say how many children the parents had in common and did not know whether the couple arrived at the daycare together or separately.

“It appears from the video that I’ve seen so far that it looked like the typical pickup,” he said.

The major said the children and the father were in his vehicle, apparently about to leave the daycare.

“The mother approached the other half,” he said, “the father, we’re assuming. So then, some rounds were exchanged from the female, and shortly after, the male subject exited the vehicle. She pursued the male subject, eventually ended up going back around the vehicle at some point, and then back to the front of the entrance of the daycare.”

Konkel said more shots were then fired. He could not verify the total number of rounds discharged.

The major said that when deputies arrived on scene, the woman was still there and made statements indicating she was involved in the shooting.

“She identified herself to the deputies as being involved,” Konkel said, “and so she was taken into custody pretty quickly. She didn’t provide any resistance or anything like that.”

When asked if the woman confessed to shooting the father, Konkel replied, “She made statements.”

Konkel said the crime scene was complicated because at the time of the shooting, other parents were at the daycare picking up their children.

He added that deputies are still interviewing witnesses, and he did not know how many people witnessed the incident, but the video provides a fairly clear picture of what happened. He added that prior to the shooting, the video that he saw did not show any dispute between the parents prior to the first rounds being fired.

“Did the video show any shouting, finger-pointing, or any signs of an argument?” I asked.

“Like I said,” Konkel responded, “it looked like a typical—what you would see parents picking up their kids at a daycare. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary.”

“I want to be careful what I say,” he added, “because, obviously, there’s only limited camera angles. So, there’s audio and video, and obviously, you can’t see around doors and windows and everything else. But the information that was presented in the video clearly pointed to her.”
