Was it worth it?

Dear Editor:

I know this happened a long time ago. If someone has a different story or just wondered what happened to us, this is it. We were born on 40 acres on Geiger Road. In 1965, our dad, Sumpter Earl “Buster” Geiger, got sick and sold two 10-acre tracts, more or less, on a handshake and let the two people make payments. He passed away right after that. Whether payments were paid to the full amount we have no idea.

So, here’s a young mother, whose husband had just passed away, with five young children, ages 6 months to 10 years, wondering what we are going to do. The old lady across the street with a son tricked my mom into giving them our 20 acres and house and took it to the bank and used it as collateral down payment on a loan. We ended up losing our 20 acres and home.

I remember the lady’s name and doubt she is still alive. Maybe the son or someone that he bragged to is alive. Do you ever wonder what happened to the five young kids? Four ended up in an orphanage 200 miles away, and one was adopted.

I’m wondering, what did you use the money for, was it worth stealing 20 acres and a house for? Were you ever worried that you were going to get caught for stealing? Did you marry? Did you tell your wife that you stole 20 acres and a house from a widow who had five small children and had them kicked out?

A few years ago, some of the property went into foreclosure. I called the gentleman and told him that was some of our property from 1965 and I would like to buy it, but we couldn’t make a deal. Still wondering to this day, what did you need so bad you had to steal our property and ruin six lives? Why didn’t you use your mom’s property as collateral and just have left us alone? We were screwed and our lives were ruined.

Sincerely,

Rupert Geiger
