STARKE—Bradford County Sheriff Gordon Smith said two of his employees and three Good Samaritans rescued a pair of older women from a retention pond after the car they were in left the Sonic drive-through and crashed into the pond on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
“Several bystanders immediately jumped into the water, finding Delma Crawford, 81, and Deborah Sapp, 81, in the vehicle as it was filling with water,” wrote the sheriff in a social media post. “Corbett Rhoden, who was eating lunch at the time, and William Lusignan, an employee of the restaurant, as well as Kenneth Lowe, another bystander who was there, helped the women from the car.”
Smith said his two employees, Lt. Shaun Burgin and Michael Heeder, were the first to respond to a 911 call. The pair carried the women from the pond to picnic tables and checked them for injuries as Starke Police Department, Starke Fire Rescue, and Bradford County Fire Rescue arrived.
