Women wrote fraudulent checks to one another

Staff report

A Lake Butler woman was sentenced to four years’ probation after admitting to depositing fraudulent checks written on the account of another woman and then converting those deposits into cash.

Brittney Veronique Crawford, 32, pleaded to scheming to defraud.

According to court documents, employees of Starke’s Community State Bank called police after the defendant deposited checks and then immediately withdrew the funds on several occasions. However, the checks, drawn on a Wells Fargo account, were returned to Community State Bank for insufficient funds. A bank employee told an investigator that the defendant had also written NSF checks to the other woman, who deposited the worthless checks into her account and immediately withdrew the funds.
