At press time, the City of Lake Butler said a contractor would begin work on the municipality’s water storage ground tank on June 3.

The city was initially awarded a $875,000 state grant to replace its current tank. However, three bids to replace the structure were each over $1 million.

Lake Butler’s engineering firm, Mittalier, recommended refurbishing the utility’s current tank instead of replacing it to meet the city’s funding constraints, and persuaded the state’s Department of Environmental Protection to go along with the plan.

The city said in a notice, “Throughout construction, there may be a strange smell of sulfur or excessive chlorine that may be present until the project is completed.”
