Young hits a grand slam, but Tigers lose 8-6

Tamia Young hit a grand slam as part of a late rally, but it wasn’t enough as the Union County High School softball team lost 8-6 to host Suwannee on March 13.

The Tigers (2-7) trailed 7-1 before scoring four runs in the sixth. Campbell Webb, Mackenzie Orton and Hannah Rivera drew walks to load the bases, setting the stage for Young’s big hit.

Suwannee took advantage of a couple of errors to score a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Webb hit an RBI double in the seventh, accounting for the final two-run margin.

Young and Hayley Burke each went 2 for 4. Young finished with four RBI, while Burke and Webb each had one.

During a March 4 tournament, Union defeated Lafayette 6-4, while losing 4-3 to Yulee.

In the win over Lafayette, Burke and Angela Tucker each hit an RBI single as part of a three-run third, while Tucker and Young each drove in a run as part of a three-run fourth.

Orton also had an RBI for the Tigers, who had just four hits.

Pitcher Lily Neal earned the win.

Against Yulee, Burke gave Union a 3-2 lead with an RBI single in the fifth, but the Hornets scored two runs in the sixth to take the win.

Leah Clark, who hit an RBI triple to help the Tigers go up 2-0, went 2 for 3.

Young had one RBI as well.

Pitcher Shyla Crowe gave up just two earned runs.

Union traveled to play Baker County on March 7, losing 11-1. The Tigers had only two hits and scored their only run on a couple of errors.

On March 9, visiting Ridgeview scored five runs in the fifth inning in handing the Tigers a 6-3 loss.

Burke, who went 2 for 3, hit an RBI to help Union take a 2-0 lead in the first, while a Crowe single made it 3-0 in the third.

The Tigers travel to play Ridgeview on Tuesday, March 14, at 7 p.m. and will host Williston on Friday, March 17, at 7 p.m.
