Starke Railroad Overpass project prepares to go vertical

STARKE — Work continues on the Starke Railroad Overpass on State Road 100 in Bradford County as crews shift their focus toward construction of the bridge itself.

Installation of drilled shafts – reinforced concrete columns poured into drilled holes that will eventually support the new overpass – has been completed on the east end of the project, and crews are currently shifting to the west end for similar work. These activities require the use of multiple cranes and drilling rigs. In the next several weeks, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting, crews will begin work on the columns themselves and column footers as the project goes vertical and the bridge begins to take shape.

This is the result of the prior year’s work, which included site preparation, construction of new frontage roads, and utility work.

Motorists traveling State Road 100 should expect periodic flagging operations as equipment is moved across the roadway. Short detours should also be anticipated to accommodate construction. However, traffic impacts will be minimized as much as possible during construction.

Work began last summer on the $23.6 million project that will ease congestion and improvement emergency response time near the railroad crossing in downtown Starke. The project is expected to be completed early 2023.
