Tigers defeat 3A, 4A schools to start volleyball season

Union County High School, which plays in Class 1A, opened the volleyball season with wins over Class 3A Bradford and Class 4A Suwannee.

After opening with a sweep of Bradford, the Tigers did lose a set against visiting Suwannee on Aug. 25. Union won two straight sets to close out the match, winning 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 25-20, 25-14).

Jordan Hendricks and Kamryn Southerland had 18 and 14 assists, respectively, while Jaycee Davis recorded 15 kills and 13 digs. Jailyn Simmons had 13 kills and two blocks, while Emily Wilson recorded a team high in blocks with four. Layla Barber added two blocks.

Jurney Crim tied Davis for the lead in digs with 13, while Hendricks and Southerland had eight and seven, respectively.

The Tigers opened the season with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-20) over visiting Bradford on Aug. 23. Davis and Simmons were the attack leaders with seven kills each.

Davis also led the team in digs with 11. Crim had nine digs to go along with four service aces, while Hendricks and Wilson had seven and six digs, respectively.

Southerland tallied 13 assists.

Union travels to play Lafayette on Monday, Aug. 29, at 6 p.m. The Tigers return home to play Bell on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 6:30 p.m. before taking to the road again for a Tuesday, Sept. 6, match against Baker County, which will start at 6:30 p.m.

Junior varsity matches begin an hour prior to the scheduled starts of the varsity matches.
