3 earns multiple wins for KHHS at Oakleaf High wrestling event

Keystone Heights High School went 0-5 in Oakleaf’s Dec. 9 Friday Knight Lights wrestling tournament, but the Indians had three individuals earn multiple wins by pinning their opponents.

The Indians opened with a 78-0 loss to Glynn Academy. Then, in a 48-30 loss to Orange Park, they had four wrestlers pin their opponents: Phoenix Contes in 1:30 in the 132-pound class, Luke Graves in 1:16 in the 138 class, Canyon Hayes in 39 seconds in the 145 class and Steven Raab in 1:58 in the 220 class. Keystone also had a win by forfeit.

Hayes earned the only win against Oakleaf, pinning his opponent in what turned out to be a 74-6 team loss.

The Indians lost 52-30 to Ponte Vedra, with the Sharks forfeiting three weight classes. Graves pinned his opponent in 18 seconds, while Raab pinned his in 1:05.

Keystone ended the tournament with a 42-24 loss to Mainland. Raab pinned his opponent in 3:23, while Mainland forfeited three classes.

Keystone participated in Sandalwood’s Arlington Optimist Individual Bracketed Tournament on Dec. 3, with Joshua Dowling wrestling his way to the championship match in the 285 class. Dowling pinned his first three opponents in 1:37, 1:36 and 55 seconds before he was pinned in 36 seconds by Englewood’s Keith Forbes in the final match.

The Indians got third-place finishes from Graves and Raab.

Graves pinned his first opponent in 1:09 before getting pinned in 3:29 in the second round. He bounced back with three straight pins in under a minute each (30 seconds, 29 seconds and 47 seconds).

Raab, wrestling in the 285 class, pinned his first opponent in 37 seconds before getting pinned in 2:23 in the second round. He then recorded three straight pins in 28 seconds, 2:33 and 31 seconds before winning 6-2 in his final match.

Atreyu Contes almost made it to the third-place match in the 106 class. After a first-round bye, he was pinned in 5:07. He benefitted from two straight byes before losing 8-7.

Hayes and Hunter Crumpton (132) each went 2-2, while Henry Carhuayo earned one win in the 170 class.
