Keystone Heights High School’s Atreyu Contes and Mikey McCall wrestled at the Feb. 28-March 1 Region 2-1A meet at Palm Bay High School in Melbourne, with Contes coming up one win short of qualifying for state.

Contes, who wrestles in the 113-pound class, started off with a 12-4 loss by major decision to Bell Creek’s Gavin Najera, but then strung together three wins before being eliminated in the consolation semifinals. Contes earned his first win by pinning Nature Coast Tech’s Julain Arce in 1:50. After a 7-0 win over Space Coast’s Zakary Cordova, he won by an 8-0 major decision over Cocoa’s Ivan Townsend.

Needing one more win to advance to the third-place match, Contest was pinned in 1:30 by Weeki Wachee’s Nick Guy, who would go on to place third.

Najera, who defeated Contes in the first round, would place fourth, earning the last state-qualifying spot.
