A group of kids ignited a brush fire behind residential homes in downtown Keystone Heights.
On Wednesday, January 7, the fire started at 5:11 P.M. near the area of 420 SW Magnolia Ave, Keystone Heights, Clay County.
According to a Facebook post by the City of Keystone Heights, the fire was most likely caused by kids playing with a lighter.
The city expressed gratitude to both the Clay County Fire Rescue and the Clay County Sheriff’s Department for their quick response.
According to the National Weather Service Drought Monitor, a post from Clay County Fire Rescue states that Clay County is currently experiencing a D2 Severe Drought.
A D2 Severe Drought means Crop or pasture loss is likely, fire risk is very high, water shortages are common, and water restrictions are imposed by the National Weather Service.
As a friendly reminder, dryer conditions increase the risk of brush fires. Keep leaves and debris to a minimum when burning. Do not leave any fire unattended. Report any brush fires immediately to the fire department to help mitigate their spread.
Currently, there is no burning ban in effect.
