Union County Memorial Day speaker: “We are still here, still free, still trying”

American Legion Post 153 Adjutant Brian Reagan

A Union County crowd gathered Monday at the Lake Butler Masonic Lodge for the 2026 Memorial Day Ceremony, where American Legion Post 153 Adjutant Brian Reagan delivered a keynote address that linked the sacrifices of generations of fallen American service members to the nation’s coming 250th anniversary.

“Two hundred and fifty years ago, as the specter of tyranny and oppression loomed like a shadow in the valley of death, colonial visionaries from all walks of life did something the world had never quite seen,” Reagan said. “They pledged to one another and to the ages their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. They did not know if it would work. They only knew it was worth trying. And today, a quarter of a millennium later, we are still here, still free, still trying.”
