Willie Davis

Willie Henry Davis, 73, of Lake City passed away peacefully at his home Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026. He was born on July 19, 1953, in Lake City, but spent most of his life in Union and Bradford counties. Willie was a hardworking man who believed in doing things the right way and earning what you had. Over the years, he worked a number of different jobs, including at the filling station in Lake Butler, Coleman’s meat-processing plant in Alachua, and the airport in Lake City. Each job was part of the life he built through hard work and determination. He spent 30 years working at the sawmill before retiring. He was dependable, hardworking, and never afraid to speak his mind. If Willie had an opinion, you were probably going to hear it, whether you asked for it or not. He was a straight shooter and told you exactly what he thought. That honesty was just part of who he was, and the people who knew him best wouldn’t have wanted him any other way. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved fishing and spending time outdoors, and he took pride in working his cows on the farm. He enjoyed being around his neighbors and friends and was happiest when he was outside doing what he loved. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Davis; mother, Louise Mandy; stepfather, Ernest Crews; and his sisters, Newt Todd and Barbara Ann Saylors.
Family was important to Willie. He is survived by his brother, Bobby Davis; sisters, Nettie Stokes and Mary Todd; and many nieces and nephews. He shared many years of memories with his family, and those memories will be treasured by those who knew and loved him.
A visitation will be held Saturday, Aug. 22, from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Archer-Milton Funeral Home. Family and friends are invited to come together, share memories, and celebrate his life. Willie was a hardworking, honest, and plainspoken man who lived life in his own way. He loved the outdoors, took pride in his work, and cared about the people close to him. He will be missed and remembered by all who had the chance to know him.

Dr. Marvin Johnson

Dr. Marvin Wade Johnson departed this world on Monday, Aug. 10, 2026, in Gainesville at the remarkable age of 95. Born June 13, 1931, in Selma, Alabama, Dr. Johnson’s life was a testament to enduring intellect, steadfast faith, devoted service, and boundless love for his family and community. From the earliest days of his youth in Selma, the foundations of character and ambition were set in place for a life marked by both achievement and humility. After high school, he served his country by enlisting in the United States Coast Guard, where he worked as a medic aboard ships. His service helped create the pathway for him to pursue his calling in medicine, and in 1960, he graduated from medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He began his medical residency in Puerto Rico before continuing his training at the University of Florida. Upon completing his residency, he accepted his first position in Central Florida, where he practiced medicine until 1984. That year, he took the courageous leap of moving to Lake Butler and opening his own medical practice. For the next 42 years, Dr. Johnson devoted himself to that practice and the people who depended upon him before ultimately retiring. All told, his service to medicine, his community, and others spanned more than 62 years. His patients were met with unwavering commitment, compassion, and care. His infamous “magic shot” brought relief to countless people throughout North Florida and is still commonly requested today. But Dr. Johnson was far more than a family doctor. He held medical board certifications in family medicine, emergency medicine, nuclear medicine, geriatrics, and pathology. His medical instincts were extraordinary; he could often recognize and diagnose conditions simply by observing someone, even outside the walls of his practice. The impact of his remarkable medical career is immeasurable, and his presence will be deeply missed by the generations of patients and families he served. He was not only a gifted physician; he had a larger-than-life personality. His energy, compassion, grace, and humility were unmatched. He could almost always be found with a smile on his face, ready with a joke, a witty remark, or a few words to brighten someone’s day. He lived an active life and embraced the things he loved. Whether fishing, hunting in the woods, tending his garden, or making his homemade wine, he was always willing and ready to spend time with his friends and family. At the center of Dr. Johnson’s world was his beloved family, whose lives were interwoven with his through bonds of affection, devotion, and mutual respect.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Jennie Reed, whose companionship was a source of constant joy and comfort. He also leaves behind his beloved children, Edythe Johnson of Lake Butler, Marvin Wade (Shea) Johnson Jr. of Hudson, Eva Johnson of St. Petersburg, Whit (Candice) Johnson of Starke, Andrea (Dan) Henrie of St. Petersburg, and Holly (Andrew) Cain of Gainesville. He was lovingly known as “Grandpa” to Claudia Johnson, Sofie Johnson, Carson Johnson, Parker Johnson, Lydia Obenshain, Wesley (Lauren) Obenshain, John Burton, Eve Burton, Darien Henrie, Jadon Henrie, Brannon Henrie, Locklyn Cain, Truex Cain, Paxton Cain, and Liberty Cain. He was affectionately known as “Dr. Grandpa” to Caspian Johnson and Beckett Johnson. Each of his grandchildren carries forward a spark of his light and a piece of the extraordinary legacy he leaves behind. His circle of love extended further to his sister-in-law, Jeanie Johnson; and brother-in-law, Robert Combs.
Dr. Johnson was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Sophie Johnson; his brothers, Williiam Carson Johnson, Dr. Edward Lewis Johnson, Dr. Herbert Cecil Johnson, and Charles Milton Johnson; sisters, Annie Wilda Johnson, Edith Mae Johnson, Edna Grace Johnson Smedley, and Mildred Ann Johnson Combs; and a stillborn child. Their memories remained a part of his life, a constellation of familial love and devotion woven throughout the remarkable story of Dr. Johnson’s own life.
A funeral honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Johnson will be held Saturday, Aug. 15, at First Christian Church in Lake Butler. Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m., followed by the funeral service from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. The service will be officiated by Brother Art Peterson. Immediately afterward, Dr. Johnson will be laid to rest at Dekle Cemetery, a final journey marked by reverence, gratitude, and love.
Though the world is quieter with Dr. Johnson’s passing, his presence endures in the countless lives he touched. His warmth, integrity, humor, faith, and unwavering dedication to both family and vocation created a legacy that will be remembered and cherished for generations. He leaves behind more than the accomplishments of an extraordinary medical career. He leaves behind generations of patients who were cared for, families who trusted him, friends who laughed alongside him, and a family who had the privilege of knowing him not simply as Dr. Johnson, but as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

Cathy Thomas

Mary Catherine “Cathy” Thomas, born June 10, 1947, in Jacksonville, passed away peacefully at her home in Brooker on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, following an extended illness. Cathy was a woman who loved her family deeply and spent her life taking care of the people around her. She was a devoted wife, mother, Nana, sister, and friend, and her family was always at the center of her world. She was married to Donnie Thomas for more than 52 years. Together, they built a life filled with family, hard work, good memories, and the many ups and downs that come with a lifetime together. Through it all, they remained by each other’s side. She was a loving mother to David (Vicki) Dearing, Amanda (James) Matti, Shelley (David) Vignola, and Michelle Swanson. She was preceded in death by her son, James Michael “Bo” Thomas, whose memory remained a special part of her heart and her family’s life. Being a Nana was one of her greatest joys. She loved her grandchildren dearly, Tyler Michael Thomas, Andrew Dearing, Austin Donnie Thomas, Avery Dearing, Austin Matti, Alyssa Matti, and Hayden Crews; as well as her great-grandchildren, Annslie Thomas, Alister Thomas, Tyler Michael Thomas II, John David Dearing, and Hunter Mitchell. She was proud of each of them and loved watching them grow, always ready with encouragement, advice, or simply a listening ear. She is also survived by her brother, T.L. Ogier. Cathy was a hard worker throughout her life. In the early 1990s, she owned Light Spread and Red Fox restaurants in Macclenny. She enjoyed bringing people together, cooking good food, and making sure everyone who walked through the door felt welcome. Later, Cathy worked at UCI and RMC prisons until her retirement in 2006. She was known for her strong work ethic and the integrity she brought to everything she did. Outside of work, she found happiness in the simple things. She loved flowers and could spend hours enjoying the beauty around her. She especially loved watching hummingbirds outside her window. She also loved to cook, and for Cathy, cooking was about much more than putting food on the table. It was one of the ways she showed her love. Feeding her family, gathering everyone around a meal, and knowing the people she loved were happy were some of the things that meant the most to her. Those who knew her will remember her as a strong, caring woman with a big heart. She was the family matriarch, the one who loved fiercely, worried deeply, gave plenty of advice, and always wanted the best for the people she loved. Her family and friends will miss her stories, her cooking, her stubborn streak, her kindness, and most of all, simply having her there. Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Mary Ogier; and her beloved son, James Michael “Bo” Thomas.
Visitation was held Monday, Aug. 17, at New River Baptist Church, 16703 S.W. 144th Ave., Brooker. The funeral service followed the visitation with interment at New River Baptist Church Cemetery. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever a part of the family she loved so much.
