Delia Johnson’s bases-loaded double in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the difference as the Keystone Heights High School softball team defeated visiting West Nassau 7-4 in a Region 1-3A quarterfinal game tonight (May 11).

The Indians (18-9) now travel to Jacksonville to play Providence (19-6) in a semifinal game on Tuesday, May 17, at 7 p.m. Providence advanced by defeating Marianna (17-5) 6-1.

Keystone held a 4-3 lead over West Nassau (16-8) when it loaded the bases with one out in the sixth. Kiley Channell hit a single, while Abbie Roach ground into a fielder’s choice on which both runners were safe. Madi Mitzel, who hit a two-run homer in the fourth to put the Indians ahead 4-1, was intentionally walked. That set the stage for Johnson, whose hit — her first of the game — cleared the bases and gave Keystone a four-run lead.

The Indians’ first two runs were scored on an error and a single by Kinley Carlton.

Mitzel, who went 2 for 2 with two RBI, earned the win in the circle, gave up three earned runs on eight hits and two walks. She had four strikeouts.
